BELVEA Begin Formula (International Markets)

BELVEA Begin Formula is a high DHA Fish Body Oil (DHA 250mg). It is a nutritional supplement for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers who wishes to supplement their DHA intake for the brain and eyes development for their unborn child or their new baby.

BELVEA Begin Formula is genuine fish body oil DHA. Fish body oil is different from normal fish oil.

The difference is: Fish Body Oil – does not contain any Fish Liver Oil

It is also different from algae oil, as it is in triglycerides (TG) form and is easily digestible by our digestive system, as our bodies recognize TG as food.

BELVEA Begin Formula is possibly the highest purity oil in the market as it is a triple distilled oil (very different from normal fish oils that are merely filtered – distillation is a more sophisticated process of purifying compared to filtration).

This product is a PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE (PhEur) product (it’s manufacturing standards are that comparable to medicine). It is also manufactured under GMP manufacturing conditions. It is slightly more expensive than normal fish oil, but it is certainly a worthwhile investment for the sake of our babies. Quality comes at a price.

Why is DHA Important During Pregnancy and During Breastfeeding?

During pregnancy, DHA supports optimal infant brain, eye and nervous system development.

Developing foetus and growing infants cannot efficiently produce their own DHA and must obtain this vital nutrient through the placenta during pregnancy and from breast milk after birth.

Maternal DHA supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding periods, significantly enhances the level of DHA available to the foetus and infant and may improve certain developmental outcomes, such as:

  • Motor coordination
  • Focus & concentration

Breast milk naturally contains DHA. Therefore, it is important that breastfeeding women consume a healthy diet that includes these important nutrients to support both their health and the health of their developing infant.

Most women do not get enough DHA in their diets. The primary source of DHA is fatty fish, which we find lacking in our modern / convenience diet.

BELVEA Begin Formula is available from the following Hospitals & Women’s Specialist Clinics in Malaysia

Research on The Benefits of DHA in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Some Clinical Research Findings on the Benefits of DHA:

DHA is essential for the development of foetal brain, nervous system and eye (Lauritzen L. et al; The Essentiality of Long Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acid in Relation to the Development of the Brain & Retina; Prog Lipid Res 2001; 40:1-94)

DHA is associated with newborn’s greater head circumference, weight and length (Foreman van Drongelen et. al.; Long-chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Pre-Term Infants: Status at Birth and It’s influence on Post-Natal Levels; Journal Pediatric 1995, 126(4): 611-618

DHA supplements may help reduce the incidence of postpartum depression (Medscape Medical News 2002; ACS Abstract: AGFD 28 (495307). April 8, 2002.)

Nutritional Prevention of Preterm Birth and Other Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (James A McGregor et. al; The Omega-3 Story – OBSTETRIC AND GYNECOLOGIC SURVEY 2001;56:S1-S13)

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Early Dietary Supply of Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Mental Development in Term Infants. (Birch EE et. al Developmental Med and Child Neurol, 2000; 42:174-181)

These findings are just some, from the large array of clinical data, supporting the essentiality of DHA in pregnancy. Indeed, pregnancy should not be the only reason for women to increase DHA intake. In fact, DHA is essential for everybody. According to the American Deitetic Association, eating polyunsaturated fats reduces the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) level.

Further research also found that diets high in Omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis pain. Low levels of DHA have been associated with memory loss, depression and vision problem.
